2011 Climbing Diary

This table is little more than an electronic version of a notebook that I keep each year about the climbs that I do. Note that I have only ever recorded those routes in the extreme grades. It may be elitist but in its own peculiar way it forces me to attempt routes that are close to my limit in order to keep the average grade up.

There are links to any trip reports or photos in the notes column.

Note that bolted routes are included in this list and are given French Gradings indicated by F before the grade.

Date Route Grade Led Notes
23 Oct Giggleswick South
Sergeant Bilko F6a+ y Poor and a bit spooky in the middle section.
Get Shorty F6a+ y The crux is easy once you figure it out.
Red Dwarf F6a y Getting a bit dirty at the top.
The Little Waster F6b   Three bolts and three tricky moves.
Norman Wisdom F6a   The lower half is OK but the quality deteriorates as you get higher.
Red Dwarf F6a+   All a bit damp and greasy.
23 July Robin Proctor’s Scar
Tombstone Blues F6a y Felt easy.
Subterranean Homesick Blues F6a+ y Easy apart from a couple of moves that you can yard through.
Wheels on Fire F6a+ y Still good.
The Flying Horseman F6a+ y I'm sure something has come off this, felt harder than normal.
Drillers in the Mist F6b   Just top-roped it after lowering off the previous route.
3 July Stonestar Crag
Columbia E1   A very hot day, this was our third crag.
5 June Goat Crag

8 May Trollers Gill
Yew Can Do F6a+   Felt very jaded after yesterday.

1 May Craig y Merched
Faltenbalg Connection E1 y Found it easy.
Vermillion Wash E1   Technical section to get to the break, a bit dirty.
Magic Mushroom E1 y Good climbing but necky up to half height, pretty hard for the grade.
The Flourish of Strumpets E1   Hardly worth the grade - a couple of VS moves to an easy 5c move.

Black Death E1 y Hard for the grade, bold and technical on the lower wall.
A Tishoo, A Tishoo E2   Quite good but a bit contrived at the top.
3 April Anglezarke
First Finale E1   Given E2 in the guide but it's easier than Terror Cotta at HVS!
Mu 'Azib E1   Steep and slightly loose.
19 Mar Crummackdale
Arc de Triomph E1   Not as good as the guidebook makes out. Part of a day mainly doing HVSs.

  Pensile Wall F6a y The lower half is a retro-bolted E1.
Catman Do F6a+ y A bit of a lurch on the crux.
Prowling Around F6b   Just top-roped it as I wasn't feeling too confident.
The Joker F6a+ y Not very good.
